In English we use phrases to ask for something we want politely.

I'd like... =  I would like...  / Can I have...? / Could I have...?

Examples sentences : 

  • I'd like a bottle of water, please.
  • Can I have the bill, please?
  • Could I have the chicken salad, please?

We use Would you like...? for offers (when we want to give something or help someone)

Examples sentences :

  • Would you like a drink?
  • Would you like cheese in your burger?
  • Would you like a cup of tea?

Notes for use of polite request / offer / suggestions :

'Would you like' has the same meaning as 'Do you want' but is a more polite way of offering something!

In English we use the question phrase 'Why don't you / we...?' to make a polite suggestion.

  • Why don't you see a doctor?
  • Why don't you go home and go to bed?
  • Why don't you take the day off?
  • Why don't we get a bottle?

Come on dear, what would you like to drink?그러지 말아봐, 자기, 음료는 뭘 마실래?
While we are here, shall we get the drinks, too?여기 있는 김에, 마실 것도 담을까?
Would you like any salad or sides with that?샐러드나 사이드디쉬 추가하실 것 있으신가요?
Diego, we were just about to order some drinks, would you like something?디에고, 술을 좀 시킬까 했는데 뭐 마시고 싶은 거 있어요?
There are 3 types of parmesan, which one would you like me to get?파마산 종류가 3개 있는데, 어느 걸 사면 좋겠어?
Would you like me to bring you anything?뭐라도 가져다 줄까?
It must be a sign, why don't you...이건 운명이 분명해, 그럼 나랑...
I would recommend you get some mussels.나는 홍합을 추천하는데.
Okay, shall we go to Tesco, then?그래, 그럼 테스코에 가볼까?
