Indirect question Exercises

Form : ( Indirect question phrase + question word / if / whether + subject + verb )

In English, in more formal situations, we often use indirect questions because they sound more polite.

To make a question more polite we often begin with an indirect question phrase such as:

  • Could you tell me...?
  • Do you know...?
  • Have you any idea...?
  • Can you tell me...?


Example questions :

DIRECT QUESTION : Where is the post office?

INDIRECT QUESTION : Do you know where the post office is?

DIRECT QUESTION : What's the time?

INDIRECT QUESTION : Could you tell me what the time is?

DIRECT QUESTION : Does this train go to Brighton?

INDIRECT QUESTION : Can you tell me if this train goes to Brighton?

DIRECT QUESTION : Is there a bank nearby?

INDIRECT QUESTION : Have you any idea whether there is a bank nearby?


Note for use of indirect questions :

If the direct question begins with an auxiliary verb ( no question word), add 'if' or 'whether' after an indirect question phrase to make the question indirect.

We don't use 'if' or whether with Do you think...?

eg. Do you think he's gone to London? NOT Do you think if he's gone to London?

Do you think we can let him go out?밖으로 내보내도 되려나?
Do you know what colour the packet is?통이 무슨 색깔인지 알아?
Can you tell me, Nick, how much they pay, please?말해줄래요, 닉, 그 사람들은 얼마나 내는데요?
Do you know if he has got a girlfriend?여자친구 있는지 알아?
Do you have a plan about what you are going to do now?이제 뭘 어떡할지 계획이 있어?
Yes, I'm ready, do you think I'll need a jacket?응, 준비 됐어. 자켓 하나 필요할까?
Do you know why they built this enormous pier?이 엄청난 부두를 왜 지었는지 혹시 알아?
Yeah, I forgot that, when do you think we can meet, then?맞아, 깜빡했네, 그럼 네 생각엔 언제쯤 만나면 될 거 같아?
Do you know how the girls are getting to Soho?친구분들은 뭐 타고 소호로 가신대?
When do you think you are going to look for houses again?그럼 언제 다시 집 보러 나갈 거야?
Do you think we should buy the return tickets now?왕복 티켓도 지금 사야 하려나?

Do you think you are a good cook?스스로 생각하기에 요리 잘하는 것 같아?
But why do you think we should leave the house?그치만 왜 다른 집을 구해야 한다고 생각하는 거야?
