In English we use phrases to ask for something we want politely.

I'd like... =  I would like...  / Can I have...? / Could I have...?

Examples sentences : 

  • I'd like a bottle of water, please.
  • Can I have the bill, please?
  • Could I have the chicken salad, please?

We use Would you like...? for offers (when we want to give something or help someone)

Examples sentences :

  • Would you like a drink?
  • Would you like cheese in your burger?
  • Would you like a cup of tea?

Notes for use of polite request / offer / suggestions :

'Would you like' has the same meaning as 'Do you want' but is a more polite way of offering something!

In English we use the question phrase 'Why don't you / we...?' to make a polite suggestion.

  • Why don't you see a doctor?
  • Why don't you go home and go to bed?
  • Why don't you take the day off?
  • Why don't we get a bottle?

Do you mind if I join you?Ti dispiace se mi unisco a voi?
Would you like to have anything as a starter?Volete qualcosa come antipasto?
Would you like to get some cashback?Desidera un po’ di cashback?
Yes sir, what would you like to order?Si signore, che cosa desidera ordinare?
Shall we call them to make appointments for Saturday?Li chiamiamo per prendere appuntamento per sabato?
Shall we use the self-checkout?Usiamo la cassa fai da te?
What are you worried about? Why don't we just do it?Cosa ti preoccupa? Perché non lo facciamo e basta?
Shall we check if they have that very special rice first?Controlliamo prima se hanno quel riso molto speciale?
Shall we get a bottle of chardonnay?Prendiamo una bottiglia di Chardonnay?
Would you like some pills for your headache?Vorresti qualche pillola per il tuo mal di testa?
Shall we check the deli section while we are here?Diamo un’occhiata alla sezione gastronomia già che siamo qui?
Would you like to sit by the window?Vuoi sederti vicino alla finestra?
Shall we move your desk back near the window?Spostiamo di nuovo la tua scrivania vicino alla finestra?
Don't you think a 50% rise is too much!?Non pensi che un aumento del 50% sia troppo!?
Why don't you use your own phone?Perché non usi il tuo telefono?
Would you like a packet of 10 or 20, sir?Desidera un pacchetto da 10 o 20 signore?
Or shall I prepare something for you?Oppure vuoi che ti prepari qualcosa?
That's not bad, shall we start checking some houses, then?Non è male, iniziamo a guardare qualche casa, allora?
