In English, when a defining relative clause contains a continuous or passive verb form, we can often leave out who, that or which and the auxiliary. These are called reduced relative clauses and are very common in spoken English.

Example sentences :

  • Everyone (who is) working in this office suffers from some kind of back pain.
  • The trilogy (that was) written by Stieg Larsson has been made into a film.
  • Who is the girl (who is) sitting next to your brother?
  • Yesterday I read a book (which was) written by Hemingway.
  • Please book all the tickets (that are) available.

Reduced relative clause example sentences
Also, in London we have digital time tables showing when buses are coming.Além disso, em Londres nós temos tabelas te tempo digitais nos mostrando quando os ônibus estão chegando.
It was definitely not me arranging the time!Definitivamente, não fui eu a marcar a hora!
There are oven-mitts hanging on the wall.As luvas para forno estão penduradas na parede.
Hang on a sec, there is another couple living upstairs.Só um segundo, há outro casal vivendo no piso superior.
It's the first time I've heard of someone wanting cubed mushrooms.É a primeira vez que eu ouço alguém dizer que quer cogumelos em cubos.
Basically, it's a boy size robot, thinking it's not a robot.Basicamente, é um robô do tamanho de um garoto, que pensa que não é um robô.
Then I saw your bag sitting on the chair by itself.Então eu vi seu saco sozinho na cadeira.
